Why??
STEM was born out of frustration. There are so many tools available for musicians to create music, but when it comes to collaboration, we often find ourselves sending files back and forth to each other (even entire projects), and struggling to make decisions.
Other projects tried to solve this by creating a DAW online where band members can collaborate, but having all the editing power (and distractions) of a full DAW online doesn't help with decision making - there are too many options and knobs.
So we thought: in a band, each member has a part (or parts) to play, meaning they contribute with tracks / stems. We realised that to solve these problems, what we really needed was a tool that limits our options, one that focuses on the commentary process, while forcing the band members to share full STEMS.
This is why we created STEM - a place that emphasises not the music creation itself (a real DAW is the correct place for that) but instead emphasises the commentary process, the decision making, and the ability to share with access control, to get external feedback in a controlled way.
With STEM, you define collaborators, place STEMS, discuss with comments on tracks, iterate on versions, and make decisions.
This is our mission - to be a tool that focuses on that last step: to make decisions together. No useless features clutter, no AI slop, no distractions.
